Digital Printing Services

Digital printing produces a job from digital artwork without the plate setup used in offset printing. Its suitability still depends on the stock, artwork, quantity and finishing, so compare a complete specification rather than assuming one process is always better.

Look for content that changes

Digital production is worth discussing when an order has several versions, changing information or a quantity you want to replenish in smaller runs. Explain the actual need rather than choosing the method from a general run-size rule.

Count each edition separately. For property materials, for example, the company identity may stay the same while the property details and quantities change.

Keep the quote tied to the specification

Supply the finished dimensions, stock, printed sides or pages, finishing and quantities. Ask about suitability for the proposed material and construction, and compare the complete quote if another method is offered.

A digital file doesn’t mean any substrate, size or finish is available. Display work and multipart forms still need their own material and assembly review.

Check variable information deliberately

If information changes from piece to piece, identify the fields and provide data through the agreed process. Use only data you are authorized to supply, and confirm what preparation is included.

  • Explain which fields vary and which stay fixed.
  • Review representative versions, including unusually long entries.
  • Check that the variable information appears in the correct position.
  • Agree on the final data and artwork before approval.

A correct base layout doesn’t establish that every variable record is correct. The review should address both the template and the supplied information.

Use a smaller run for a specific reason

A shorter supply may make sense when content is likely to change. It can also support a clearly defined test of a message or format, provided the business can record the result.

Compare the complete cost of the orders you expect to need. Smaller runs don’t automatically mean lower overall cost, and a test doesn’t produce useful evidence unless its purpose and measurement are clear.

Preserve the approved version

Check wording, dimensions and contact details on the proof. Ask what it demonstrates about paper and printed color, particularly when matching an earlier piece.

Keep the final file, specification and job reference together. In a later quote request, state what has changed and reconfirm the material, price and handoff. A reusable file is a starting point, not automatic authorization to repeat the old order.

Print Quality: Paper, Ink & Resolution

Print quality depends on the interaction of the artwork, paper, ink or toner and production process. Check those parts together, using the intended size and a suitable proof, rather than judging the result from screen resolution alone.
